Between June and mid-October is possible to do some free kayaking on the Hudson River, through an NGO called The Downtown Boathouse who wants to help new yorkers and its tourists to enjoy this program. This NGO works primarily at Piers 40, 96 and 72th Street. But you can also found them in Central Park and Dumbo (Brooklyn).
At the east edge of Houston Street on the Hudson River, take the Metro to get to Houston Street 1/9 A, C, or E to Canal St and walk east to the river and 5 blocks north over esplanade. Pier 96 has good views of the city, with a cute little park where you can rest after exercise. On 72th street, there is less crowded than other places, and another park next to the river to rest. The dock is located on the walkway next to the water in Riverside Park, almost on 72th street; Climbing the stairs of 72nd Street to the park and follow the path that leads to the river.
Our advice:
If you include this activity in your visit to New York, you just have to have a lock and clothing, in each of the piers you would find a locker, where you can change and store your stuff while touring the Hudson River.

Skate´s Night meets at the southern end of Union Square Park (14th Street), near to the stairs. Traffic in the Union Square area can be heavy, so if you arrive by car, try to park in the general area. If you will take the subway please take 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R, W to 14th Street Station Union Square.
It is totally free and open to the people who love skates and want to have fun fun, only basic equipment are required like: skates, helmet, wrist guards, protecting knees, elbow pads, flashing light fitted to the helmet, backpack and visible clothing. Know that you do it at your own risk, those who will not or can´t agree with our simple safety rules should refrain from participating in this event.
If the streets are wet, the activity is canceled because it is too dangerous to skate as a group in the rain and its replaced with a meeting with all the participants to share drinks and food and have a great night.

During the winter, New York prepares it's ice rinks for skating fans in different parts of the city.
Bryant Park: During the winter season, the ice rink is opened, which is known as "The Pond". It is a classic, located in the heart of Manhattan it's the only free track for those who bring their own skates. You can also rent skates. It has lockers to store belongings, if you want, you can bring a padlock and you wont have to pay for this service.

Central Park: The ice rink is called ''Wollman Rink'', located at the corner of Central Park South and Sixth Avenue this track is the largest of all but it isn't free, for those who want to see people skate, you will also have to pay.

Central Park Lasker: It's a pool during the summer and ice skating rink during the winter, located in the middle of the park between 106th and 108th streets.
