It was founded in 1906 in order to store the private John Pierpont Morgan Library. It houses a huge collection of rare books and manuscripts, besides drawings and Other Rare pieces. The collection Began As A labor of love for The Financer JP Morgan and has continued expanding and growing in recent years. The library has one of the firsts printed Bibles, including three Gutenberg Bibles. In 1924, JP Morgan´s son transformed the library into a public institution. The building inside decorated with polychrome. It has a Rotunda which leads to three public rooms, which were originally Morgan's private study, the office of librarian and the library itself. The rotunda itself has a vaulted ceiling with murals and plasterwork Inspired by Raphael, the study of Morgan, now the West Library has been called,  "one of the greatest achievements of Interior Decoration of America" while the Oriental library has triple rows of shelves.
