Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of January. It celebrates the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr., an influential American leader of civil rights. He is best known for his campaigns to end racial segregation in public transportation and racial equality in the United States.
Martin Luther King was a celebrated civil rights activist. Between 1950 and 1960, he promoted the idea of the struggle for freedom, justice and the dignity of all nationalities for nonviolent resistance. "Like anybody, I'd like to live a long life, longevity has its place, but I'm not worried about that now, I just want to do God's will." And He let me climb the mountain. But I want you to know tonight that we as a people will come to the Promised Land. "With these words, Dr. King Jr. built a crescendo of his final speech, Of April 1968. The next day, the civil rights leader was shot dead on a balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, and is remembered annually with a parade on Fifth Avenue in New York, but there are events throughout the Nation for being a federal holiday.
