Founded over thirty years ago, El Museo del Barrio, often known simply as El Museo (the museum) is the only place in New York City dedicated to Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and Latin American art. It is essential for anyone who wants to know the Latin culture from a different perspective.
It was founded by Raphael Montanez Ortiz artist in 1969 and was created with one goal: to end the marginalization of many Puerto Ricans citizens in New York. El Museo aims to publicize and celebrate Latin American culture, at the same time becomes a reference of this culture in the city of New York and the United States.
El Museo also has a shop where you can buy souvenirs of all Latin American countries, a coffee/bar and a lovely theater

Exhibitions: It has a permanent collection of more than 6,500 pieces composed of pre-Columbian and traditional objects, sculptures, photographs, drawings, sculptures and others.
